Sihanouk Ville Province - Cambodia

Sihanouk Ville or (Krong Preah Sihanouk). Also known as Kampong Som. Is a  province beautifully situated in the southern Cambodia on the Gulf of Thailand this port city is a growing Cambodian urban center, located 230km (143 mile). Southwest of the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. The province was named after King Father Norodom Sihanouk had brought independence to Cambodia on 22 December 2008 King Norodom Sihanouk signed a Royal Decree that changed the municipalities of Kep, Pailin and Sihanouk Ville into province as well as adjusted several province borders.

Sihanouk Ville doesn’t have long history like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap it was founded in 1964 after independence from France and grew up originally around the construction of Sihanouk Ville port. The construction of the was began in June 1955. The port was built in part due to the waning their control over the Mekong Delta and hence restricting river access to Cambodia. Sihanouk Ville’s beaches have made it a popular tourist destination.

The Province is served by Sihanouk Ville International Airport 18 km (11mile) from downtown although it has a limited commercial operation. Flights between Sihanouk Ville and Siem Reap Province may encourage tourists to visit Angkor Wat temples in Siem Reap to extend their stays despite the crash of a charter flight in Phnom Damrey on 25 June 2007 from Siem Reap has caused some concerns.

Sihanouk Ville attracts tourists with its relaxed beach atmosphere when compared to Thailand’s more developed ones. However the city has attracted not only tourists. But several NGOs and foreign and national investors in the last years in order to develop not only the growing tourist industry, but its capacity as an international see port and other sectors like textile and real estate. Sihanouk Ville is also a located of the main factory of Angkor Beer, the Cambodian National Beer.

Sihanouk has a total area of 2561.20km2. Sihanouk Ville is 230km distant from Phnom Penh. Sihanouk Ville sits at a peninsula round the beaches and tropical islands. It borders the north of Koh Kong, the east of Kampot, to the west and south of the beautiful Gulf of Thailand Most parts of the province belong to the peninsula showing a hilly face with some dense forest areas.

Provincial Climate

-          Cool season November to March (20-28c)

-          Hot season March to May (26-35c)

-          Rainy season May to October (24-34c with humidity up to 90%) the best beach weather begins with the end of rains in November. The day warm breezy weather that follows lasts through January. Night temperatures can get down to a chilly 20c but the days around 28c-30c. Many think December and January are best with their balmy temperatures and blue sky. At the end of January. Sihanouk Ville begins to warm and continues to get hotter through July (Maximum 35c) after February the cool occasionally blows in from the north.

December through June is said by some local outfitter to the best scuba weather with clearer (though cooler) water than the rest of the year.

Transportation and Traveling

National Road 4 Phnom Penh and Sihanouk Ville are connected by the National 4. The road has been built especially for the transport of merchandise between the capital and the port by heavy trucks and containers . it has three toll stations along.

National Road 41 it connected Sihanouk Ville with Kompot province. The road joins the province at Prey Nob district to road 4. it is in a good condition but poor in traffic signs.

Getting to Siem Reap from Sihanouk Ville is very easy ways just take a bus from Sihanouk to Siem Reap they serve the day bus and night bus with many company bus.

And you can also take a bus from Siem Reap to Sihanouk Ville with the day bus and night bus too just as the Hotel or Guesthouse Service.

Getting to Sihanouk Ville by ferry dock from Koh Kong city. There are daily boats departing from Sihanouk to Koh Kong city. It takes 4 hours and it spent 15$ for each person.

Getting to Sihanouk Ville by air for higher budget visitors and who don’t want  to spent more time and money by bus you can take a flight from Sihanouk to Siem Reap and Siem Reap to Sihanouk by domestic flight. It takes only 40m to reach there.
